How To Tell If A Saskatoon Is Ripe

POSTED IN For Consumers ON 7/2/2013

Some wonder how to tell when a saskatoon is optimal for picking. While the answer to that question depends somewhat on one’s purposes and taste, in most cases it is worth noting that the berries on the left, looking generally more red, are not yet fully ripe. The berries on the right, looking generally more blue, are ripe. That said, if you have some red berries in your bucket, they are likely to ripen over a few days. Like apples, picked saskatoons will continue to ripen at room (summer) temperature. To delay ripening, some refrigerate berries. They can also be frozen, though that has an affect on their taste and texture.
